Education for foreign coaches and parents

Dear Coach/Parent,

Welcome to Icelandic Sports!

Iceland has a strong tradition of youth sports, with nearly 90% of children participating in organized activities at some point, primarily because they find it enjoyable. While Icelandic children’s and youth sports share similarities with those in other Nordic countries, they also have their own unique characteristics.

The growing number of foreign coaches in Icelandic sports is a positive development, but it presents challenges. Knowledge considered intuitive for those raised in Iceland or familiar with its sports culture may be unfamiliar to newcomers. To bridge this gap, the sports movement has produced five short videos to help foreign coaches understand Icelandic society and the unique aspects of its sports culture. These videos are presented in Icelandic with English subtitles and accompanying slides.

The topics of the videos are:

•    Sports in Iceland – the structure
•    Policy on Children and Youth Sports
•    Parents in Sports
•    The Icelandic School System
•    Code of Ethics, Bullying, Harassment, and Violence.
